AGAINST ALL ODDS is a tightly knit quartet/quintet whose musical repertoire extends from today’s smooth jazz styles to yester-year’s vintage styles. This sound is a mix of Smooth Jazz, traditional jazz, fusion, latin, funk, R&B—along with vocals/choruses ‘sprinkled in as a ‘side order’ to the main course.
In 2007 the AAOBAND was voted 'BEST JAZZ BAND' at the Portfolio Magazine Weekly Music Awards Ceremony and was again in 2008 a nominee in that same category.
AAO was the brainchild of former guitarist Benjamin J. Tanner and saxophonist, Charles Peterson in 1990. Although the present members are not the original cast, ‘AGAINST ALL ODDS’ musical offerings and its delivery philosophy has remained unchanged: “Keep the music fresh, substantive, and entertaining".
The band has opened for and shared billings with many national reknown recording jazz ,smooth jazz and R&B artists. Some of which include saxophonist Gerald Albright, saxophonist Kirk Whallum, guitar virtuoso Stanley Jordan, Roy Ayers, keyboardist Brian Culvertson, guitarist Chuck Lobe, The Ojays, Freddie Jackson, Pieces of a Dream, Bela Fleck, Diane Shur, The Rippingstons, Spyro Gyra, Doc Powell, Stephanie Mills, The Whispers, KoKo Taylor, and the late saxophonist, George Howard.
AGAINST ALL ODDS member’s musical background is varied. Each has been involved in prior and current musical projects of their own as well as lending their musical talents to other artists project. The band keeps the "core" musicians intact as the permanent players for performances, but also has many guest artists 'sit in' from time to time.
